Plating and Presentation Techniques from Abode.

At ABODE, we believe that the way a dish is presented is just as important as what it tastes like. That’s why our chefs make use of the latest and greatest plating techniques to make your meal one to remember. Although some people may think that plating is simply about making food look pretty, there’s actually a whole art to it that involves equal amounts of creativity and skill. A well-plated dish can enhance the flavours and textures of the ingredients and even stimulate our appetites. So, whether you’re a self-confessed foodie or a newbie to the culinary scene, let’s dig into the world of plating and some of the most impressive plate presentation techniques.

What is Plating Technique?

Put simply, plating is all about how to present a plate of food to the diner. The concept of plating involves carefully considering each dish’s presentation, with the aim of elevating the dining experience. Good plating will strengthen the overall taste of a dish, as well as make the meal more appealing to the eye. On top of that, plating can help highlight the quality of the ingredients and the chef’s skill, ensuring that you’ll be itching to write a five-star review.

Abode Bistro Bar and Culinary Art

At ABODE, we pride ourselves on constantly pushing the envelope with our culinary art and plating techniques. We take meticulous care in each and every plate that leaves our kitchen, focusing on the balance of flavours, textures and colours, as well as presentation. We also utilise ingredients like microgreens, edible flowers, and sauces to add depth and complexity to each dish. Regardless of whether we’re dealing with the presentation of salads on a plate or something a little more involved, we aim to make every meal seem Michelin star worthy through plating. No matter if you’re dining from our seasonal selection or our chef’s tasting menu, the result is beautifully plated dishes that are as aesthetically pleasing as they are delicious.

Plate Presentation Techniques

Whether it’s the precise arrangement of ingredients or the use of delectable garnishes, we prioritise attention to detail when it comes to our plate presentation techniques. Some of our favourite techniques include:

Vertical Forms

The vertical form plating technique refers to, you guessed it, arranging food on the plate vertically. It often involves using cylindrical or other upright elements to create height in the dish’s presentation.

Scaling

The scaling plating technique involves arranging ingredients of similar shape and size in a repetitive pattern on a plate to emulate the appearance of scales on a fish.

Clock Face

Another common method of culinary presentation is the clockface, which involves arranging food on a plate in a circular pattern, similar to the numbers on a clock, with each ingredient placed in a specific position to create balance and visual appeal.

Nordic

The Nordic plating technique focuses on the minimalistic and simple presentation of food on a plate, emphasising clean lines and white space

Landscaping

Landscaping involves arranging food on a plate to resemble a natural landscape, using earthy elements such as soil, rocks, greenery and edible plants.
